The gunman, who KDKA reports is 61-year-old Patrick Dowdell, had a protection from abuse order against him in regards to a strangulation case and was scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday, authorities said at the press conference. They would not confirm if the woman the man was said to be chasing was targeted or related to that case.
However, sources tell KDKA he may have been targeting his wife, who had filed the protection from abuse order. She is believed to be the woman shot.
An officer with the neighboring German Township Police Department shot and killed the gunman.
“It’s unfortunate that someone lost their life, but I’m proud of my officer, and I think everybody did what they were trained to do,” the police chief of German Township, Dave Hromada, said.
Just spoke to a man who was in the magistrate's lobby waiting with 60 other people for their court hearings. Says woman ran into municipal building screaming for help, chased by a man firing a handgun. She and 2 others were shot. Bystander used belt to tie tourniquet on her arm.
