TAMPA, FL (WWSB) - A child, believed to be 4-years-old, is dead after Tampa Police say she was thrown into the Hillsborough River.

Police responded to the bridge on West Columbus Drive around 4 p.m. on Thursday after witnesses reported seeing a woman throw a child into the river. Authorities say they were on scene immediately and the dive team began a frantic search.

The child was located around 30 minutes later about 75-feet offshore and rushed to St. Joseph's Hospital. Police say she passed away.

The woman who allegedly threw the child into the river, believed to be the girl's mother, was taken into custody a short distance from the scene. Police say she drove to the bridge on Thursday but right now they have more questions than answers about this crime.

Police say this remains an active investigation. They're speaking to the woman and witnesses to figure out what happened and why.
