(RNN) - Representative John Lewis was released from an Atlanta area hospital on Sunday night after falling ill Saturday on a flight, according to WSB.

In a statement, Lewis’ spokesperson says he’s been released from the hospital with a “clean bill of health." The statement went on to say all tests were completed and he thanks everyone who shared their thoughts, prayers and concerns during his stay.

Lewis' office told local media that his hospital stay was just for routine observation.

Lewis, 78, was scheduled to appear at an event in Atlanta on Saturday evening.

He has served in the U.S. House, representing Georgia's 5th District since 1987.

He continued the fight for equal rights decades after federal laws were passed to criminalize segregation under the Jim Crow system.
