COLORADO SPRINGS, CO (KKTV/CNN) - A Colorado woman discovered that someone had posted a Craigslist ad listing her own house for rent.

The thing is, her home was not for rent.

Sherry Morfitt-Shumway and her wife thought their search for a rental home was over when they found the house for rent on Craigslist well within their budget.

"We kept asking for her phone number over and over and over again she just wouldn't give it to us," said Morfitt-Shumway.

Eventually the Craigslist poster who goes by the name, Joyce, agreed to meet at the house on Mother's Day.

"We planned our day accordingly," said Morfitt-Shumway. "We cut everything short just to go and rent this use. She never showed up - didn't email us - nothing."

That's when Morfitt-Shumway knew something wasn't right.

She got on the county assessor's website and found out that the owner's name was not Joyce but Mary Lee Chambers.

"We've owned this house for oh probably 40 years," said Chambers.

Morfitt-Shumway found Chambers’ primary address and showed up to warn her.

"I was like, 'I'm so sorry to tell you that you know somebody is trying to make money off of your home,' " Shumway said.

Chambers said the fake Craigslist poster probably got the pictures from an old online real estate listing.

"I think they're awful. How mean can you be?" Chambers said.

Police said if whoever posted the fake Craigslist ad actually got money from this scheme, they could face charges.
