OCALA, FL (RNN) - One student was injured in a school shooting at Forest High School.

The injured student was struck in the ankle and was taken to the hospital, according to ClickOrlando.com.

“Our victim has non life-threatening injuries and he is doing fine,” said Marion County Sheriff Billy Woods.

The Ocala Star-Banner said police got a call about the shooting at 8:39 a.m., and a school resource officer took the suspect in custody by 8:42 a.m.

Marion County Sheriff Billy Woods said the suspect is a 19-year-old male who is not a student at the school, and the victim is a 17-year-old boy, WFTV said.

Woods said the school resource officer heard "a large, loud bang sound" and immediately responded, finding the injured student and taking the suspect into custody.

The shooter hasn't been identified beyond his age and gender, but authorities said he isn't a student at the school.

A student at the school, who was near the shooting, told the newspaper that the shooter was standing in the hallway, shot at a closed classroom door, dropped his weapon and tried to hide.

A person who identified himself as a student at the school tweeted a photo of the inside of one of the classroom, where furniture was apparently piled to prevent a shooter from entering.

The Ocala Police Department, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, the Florida Highway Patrol and the FBI responded to at the high school in central Florida.

"I want to assure the residents of Marion County that today, they should be proud of their first responders" because "hundreds of law enforcement  immediately responded," Woods said.

Forest High School is the second-largest school in the district, with more than 2,000 students, the sheriff said.

The shooting at the schools comes on the day students across the U.S. are walking out to remember the Columbine massacre 19 years ago, and to honor the 17 people killed in Parkland in February, CNN reported.

In 1999, 12 students and one teacher were killed at Columbine High School in Colorado - years before most high school students were born.

More than 2,000 walkouts are planned across the country, at least one in every state.

However, this round of walkouts is not as popular as the ones after the Marjory Stoneman Douglas massacre in February.

Marion County School District, the school district where the latest school shooting took place, said their schools were not participating in the walkout.

"Instead of walking out of class, Marion County students will constructively use a 30-minute time period to exchange ideas, discuss differing opinions, and offer hard-thought solutions on how our community should address school tragedies like the Parkland, Florida shooting in February," the school district told ClickOrlando.com.
