NEW YORK (WABC/CNN) - The city of New York removed the statue of Doctor J. Marion Sims from Central Park on Tuesday.

The 19th century obstetrician and gynecologist is called "The father of modern gynecology."

Sims was also known for conducting experiments on enslaved black women without using anesthesia. Critics accused Sims of operating under the notion that black people didn't feel any pain.

According to History.com, Sims, who's practice was deeply rooted in the slave trade, built his reputation among rich, white plantation owners in Montgomery, Al. where he built an eight-person hospital in the heart of the slave-trading district in Montgomery.

Historical records note that experimental fistula surgeries of Sims' were performed on three teenage slaves named .Lucy, Betsey, and Anarcha.

Because of the unethical nature of Sims' practices, leaders in east Harlem have been asking for seven years that the statue be removed.

The statue will be restored and relocated to Greenwood Cemetery in Brooklyn where Sims is buried.
