MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FL (WPLG/CNN) - Miami-Dade Police say an off-duty officer working security at a Walmart was shot multiple times at close range on Wednesday, but survived.

Police say he confronted a shoplifting suspect in the parking lot. The suspect pulled a gun on him and opened fire. The officer, who was in uniform, managed to shoot the suspect, killing him.

The officer was taken to the hospital and is in stable condition. Police say he's in "great spirits."

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will investigate the shooting.

WPLG has identified the officer as Manuel Gonzalez, who is married with two children. A witness told WPLG that the suspect defied the officer's orders, and then started firing on Gonzalez in a Wild West type exchange numbering 15-18 rounds.
