Bulldogs picked to finish 3rd in SWAC East Division

(WAFF) -

The 2015 SWAC Media Day was held in Birmingham Friday morning.

All 10-member schools represented, including Alabama A&M. The Bulldogs were picked to finish 3rd in the East Division.

"They don't determine who is third or first, we determine that during the season," said sophomore running back Harvey Harris. "I'm really ready for fall camp, to see where our team's at."

"We haven't done anything to deserve a ranking," said Head Coach James Spady. "We have to play football games to earn a ranking. So thank you for the respect, if that's what it is. Last year we were picked last, and you see how that turned out."

To be successful this season, The Bulldogs must find a quarterback. Three players will fight it out in fall camp for the position.

"It's going to be a guy that's never played a Division One football game," he said. "We've got De'Angelo Ballard,Damion May, Cody Lui-Yuen, and PJ Garrett from Bessimer Academy. Those guys are going to vie for the position. We will open it back up during two a days, and the best player will be our quarterback."

He said the big positive this season is the defense is all starters from a year ago will return.

"Everybody there knows the playbook, so that's not the step we have to take coming into camp so, we'll be fine, “said linebacker Bryan Bower

There was a culture change on the Hill in 2014, effort is needed in order for any player to start this season, and help A&M reach their goals according to Spady.

"You've heard me say, effort is the price of admission. I'm not going to coach effort, you're gonna give me effort, and then I'm gonna coach the fundamentals, and I'm gonna coach the assignments, and you're gonna have to use your instincts and abilities to make us a better football team," he said.

The Bulldogs also placed two players on the All-SWAC team Friday. Defensive lineman Anthony Lanier was elected to the first team defense, while Courtney Brown was recognized by the SWAC on the second team offense. Alabama A&M opens the season September 5 against Cincinati.
