South Carolina Head Coach Steve Spurrier speaks at SEC Media Days

WSFA -

To quote famous Alabamian and baseball hall of Famer satchel Paige, "Age is a question of mind over matter. If you don't mind, it doesn't matter."

Which brings us to Steve Spurrier- The coolest 70-year-old in the room. Spurrier sounded very much like a guy who plans to be back next summer for season 24.

"I feel good, I feel good where our team is and I feel like I've got a lot years left," Spurrier said. "We were a happy bunch of gamecocks to finish that year seven and six people think we were in the tank and all disappointed their wrong. We didn’t have as
strong of a team as the last three or four years there and maybe that was the best we could do was seven and six and wins our fourth straight bowl game."

Coming off a 7 and 6 season, South Carolina, like many in the SEC, is still unsettled at quarterback. No problem, says the Head Ball Coach.

"In college you don’t need that franchise quarterback like the pro teams," Spurriers said.  "The pro teams almost all of them that zip through the playoffs they’ve got the guy that has been there a long time and what they call their franchise quarterbacks but in college you can win without maybe a top notch guy completely.  You have to have good play obviously be able to take care of the ball and be a pretty good passer and pretty good runner. If he plays with a pretty good team around him he has a chance to look good."

Kevin Sumlin's Texas A&M Aggies went 8 and 5 last season, but 3 and 5 in the SEC, finishing 6th-place in the West.

All 7 coaches in the division make at least $4-milliion a year, but somebody has to lose.

"We have created a atmosphere of expectations which is a good thing. I think three years ago I don’t think there isn’t anyone in this room that would have thought we would have won 28 games in three years coming into the SEC, particularly the SEC West," Sumlin. "Now where we are right now there is an expectation that we should be better and that’s something we have created and that we have embraced."

LSU went back to work this week in preparation for the Citrus Bowl against Notre Dame. A win would be nice, but this is also a chance to get some freshman playing time to get ready for 2018. Well it'll come in practice only. "Those guys will get more reps. So I'll give them a couple of more reps at the end of a team period. It's sending the wrong message to our football team. It's all focus on winning the game. Exactly what we did last year," said LSU Head Coach Ed Org...More >>
