BIRMINGHAM, AL (WSFA) -

New commissioner Greg Sankey says he'll have a three-word focus for the SEC: scholars, champions and leaders.

Those three words describe the man Sankey is succeeding: Mike Slive -- talk about big shoes to fill.

"Roy had created a championship game and expanded. Mike has expanded and created a network. My heartfelt observation is, if there were a parade of young people who said, he led us and he led us incredibly well, and that's created great opportunities in my life. That is a great reward," Sankey said.

The headliner on day one of SEC Media Days was Auburn's Gus Malzahn. He's about to start his third season on The Plains.

"Very excited about this upcoming season. Our players have had a very good off-season. Had a very good spring. Very good summer. The addition of Will Muschamp has been a very good thing. And we're looking forward to the start of the season," Malzahn said.

A trio of Tigers joined the Gus Bus in Hoover, including Montgomery's Jeremy Johnson.

"My approach is to stay humble. I'm blessed to be in this situation. I'm blessed to be the quarterback at Auburn University. I'm just ready to lead my team each and every game. And just the try to get better every game," Johnson said.

"We started recruiting him in ninth grade. He ran the same offense in high school. He's been our backup for two years. I really like the way he's handled himself," Malzahn said. "He's prepared for this moment. His teammates and his coaches have a lot of respect the way
he handled himself the past two years. He could have stated for most teams. So I think he's in a good spot. And really establishing himself as our team leader."

"The offense is pretty much going to still be the same. We're still going to run the ball. We're still going to throw the ball. There will just probably be a little more throwing. The offense - it's going to be amazing this year. We've got a lot of weapons around me. And I feel comfortable," Johnson said.
